One day, when I was in the 6th or 7th grade, the boys and the girls in my class were separated and shown “the film.” The main thing I remember about “the film” was that it didn’t live up to the hype. Unlike Red Asphalt, the movie we were shown a few years later in Driver’s Ed and which was very likely the cause of more than a few cases of PTSD.

The WCOID – Day 24, On Being So Bad It’s Good
The Writing Challenge of Indeterminate Duration – Day 24
Cringe-worthy 7th Grade Prose
Anyone who considers him or herself a writer of any kind, has likely heard some version of the advice “write what you know.” Simple advice, and good advice, in my opinion. But when I was in junior high, no one had yet passed that little bit of wisdom along to me; or someone had, but I’d decided, as kids will, that it didn’t apply to me. Continue reading →
The WCOID – Day 23, On Terminal Mortification
The Writing Challenge of Indeterminate Duration – Day 23
What could have happened to you in high school that would have altered the course of your life?
I skipped over this writing prompt a few times. But after discovering all my old notebooks and diaries, I thought I’d have a better perspective on what I was like and which paths I might have taken. Mostly what I discovered, however, was what a colossal dork I was. I found myself so mortified at times that I couldn’t finish reading certain passages. Continue reading →
The WCOID – Day 16, On The Trouble With Topics
The Writing Challenge of Indeterminate Duration – Day 16
I’m going bookless today!
I’d selected a writing prompt last night … I think I’ve mentioned that sometimes I like to let my brain work on a post while I sleep. But before I could noodle it around very much, it occurred to me that aside from a casual remark or two, it’s been a while since I blogged about my adventures in Lesbiland. Continue reading →
The WCOID – Day 11, On Car Wrecks and Thought Balls
The Writing Challenge Of Indeterminate Duration – Day 11
The closest experience you’ve ever had to having your life flash before your eyes.
The idea of one’s life flashing before their eyes always struck me as territory of people with a flair for the dramatic and a fondness for cliches. Lives take place on a continuum with experiences occurring in a linear fashion. Although we can typically think things faster than we can do them (e.g. thinking about making dinner vs actually making dinner), thinking thoughts still takes time. Even a flash takes time — not a long time, but time none the less.

Some Blog!
I dug this one out of the vault because it’s one of my favorites. I was reading the blog of my dear friend, Temper, who was the inspiration for the story and was hit with a sudden wave of nostalgia. So I figured I’d drag you all down memory lane with me. Enjoy!
“Why did you do all this for me?” he asked. “I don’t deserve it. I’ve never done anything for you.”
“You have been my friend,” replied Charlotte. “That in itself is a tremendous thing. I wove my webs for you because I liked you. After all, what’s a life, anyway? We’re born, we live a little while, we die… By helping you, perhaps I was trying to lift up my life a trifle. Heavens knows anyone’s life can stand a little of that.”
I’m Not Queer
I have been somewhat taken to task by a reader who felt a recent post wasn’t quite up to snuff for an “apparently queer blog.” But before I begin, I want to clarify that this isn’t a rebuttal-slam post. The comment simply set my noggin wheels to spinning and this is a product of that spin cycle.
I also want to make it clear Continue reading →
Let Me Entertain You
Let me do a few tricks
Some old and then some new tricks
I’m very versatile …
Sweet fancy Moses! First the Liebster Award and now this! Does my awesomeness know no bounds? I’d like to thank the lovely and talented Amanda at Write in the Wrong Way for this award. She smokes, she drinks, she swears and she’s a soccer mom! If we could just do something about her heterosexuality and that pesky husband of hers
Let’s Agree To Disagree
People are often divided into different camps based on preferences – Milky Way vs Snickers, Coke vs Pepsi, “hell yeah, I love it!” vs “no way, that’s exit only!” Sometimes these divisions are also affected by where one is from – tea vs coffee, pop vs soda, Vegemite vs peanut butter. And The Nominees Are …
Many thanks to fixatedann at Randomly Speaking Unorthodoxly for nominating me for the Liebster Award. I must admit that at first I thought it was the Lieber Award and that my friend Steffen, aka The Lieber Boy, had decided to toss me a blogging bone. So imagine how thrilled I was to discover that this is an actual nomination Continue reading →
